When AI-powered scams started sounding human, many people said, “This is when cybercrime became dangerous.”
As if danger suddenly arrived with machine learning.
But cybercrime didn’t start with AI.
Fraud, phishing, identity theft, malware, these existed long before algorithms learned to write emails or clone voices.
So, the real question isn’t whether AI caused cybercrime.
It’s whether AI simply revealed how fragile our digital world already was.
And the answer depends on where you stand.
AI didn’t invent cybercrime; it amplified what already existed
Long before AI, cybercrime thrived on familiar weaknesses:
- Human trust
- Weak passwords
- Poor security awareness
- Delayed updates
AI didn’t create these problems. It removed friction.
What once required time, skill, and effort can now be done in seconds with minimal expertise. From this angle, AI isn’t the culprit; it’s the magnifying glass.

Or the lack of verification processes that should have existed already?
AI didn’t break cybersecurity.
It exposed how thin many defenses already were.
AI didn’t just expose weaknesses; it created new ones
This is where the argument gets uncomfortable.
AI didn’t merely speed up old crimes. It changed the nature of some attacks entirely.
Before AI:
- Poor grammar was a warning sign
- Impersonation required access
- Sophisticated attacks needed skilled actors
Now:
- Phishing messages sound natural
- Voices can be cloned without consent
- Deepfakes can bypass identity checks
- Malware can adapt in real time
The barrier to entry has dropped dramatically.
Someone no longer needs deep technical knowledge to cause serious harm. They need access to tools and intent.
When trust itself becomes a vulnerability, that’s not just exposure. That’s transformation.
From this perspective, AI didn’t simply reveal cracks in the wall.
It introduced pressure that the wall was never designed to withstand.
The Uncomfortable Middle Ground
Both sides are right, and that’s the real problem
AI didn’t create human greed, deception, or carelessness.
But it removed friction.
And friction matters.
Friction is used to slow attackers down.
It bought the defender’s time.
It separated amateurs from professionals.
AI erased much of that separation.
So, while cybercrime didn’t begin with AI, its reach, speed, and believability changed fundamentally.
Not because humans changed, but because technology did.
Where Human Responsibility Still Matters
It’s tempting to blame AI. It’s cleaner. It feels modern.
But AI doesn’t:
- Skip software updates
- Ignore security policies
- Share passwords
- Delay risk assessments
- Treat cybersecurity as “just IT’s problem.”
People and organisations do.
AI may be the tool, but neglect is often the invitation.
The uncomfortable truth is that many AI-enabled attacks succeed not because they’re brilliant, but because basic protections were missing.
Maybe We’re Asking the Wrong Question
Instead of debating whether AI created cybercrime, a more useful question might be:
- Why were systems so easy to exploit in the first place?
- Why is security still reactive rather than built-in?
- Why do organizations invest in growth faster than protection?
- Why is cybersecurity discussed after breaches, not before them?
AI didn’t force these decisions.
It simply made their consequences harder to ignore.

Maybe the real threat isn’t artificial intelligence.
Maybe it’s artificial confidence in systems that were never truly secure.
